Sculpting Our
Stories

When Limerick Educate Together moved into our new school in Dromdarrig, Mungret in September 2017, we were invited to take part in the Percent for Art Scheme, which supports art projects in major construction developments. Through this initiative, our school received funding to create a child-centred art project that would meaningfully reflect life in our school community.

Where Nature Meets Creativity

The Vision

From the outset, we knew we wanted an artwork located on our school grounds, inspired by the environment that makes our school so special. Surrounded by mature trees, living walls and our Tiny Forest, nature plays a central role in daily life at LETS. Environmental awareness, creativity and participatory learning were key values we wanted the project to reflect.

The Artist

Following a public call for proposals, sculptor Donnacha Cahill was selected to bring the vision to life. Donnacha’s storytelling approach to sculpture and commitment to child-led creativity made him the perfect fit for the project.

The Creative Process

Donnacha worked closely with students across the school, encouraging them to share stories, drawings and ideas. Themes such as friendship, kindness, community, adventure, dreams, inclusivity and a love of nature emerged throughout the workshops. Wildlife familiar to our school grounds—including herons, mice and hares—inspired many of the final designs.

Bringing the Sculptures to Life

The sculptures were handcrafted in Donnacha’s workshop in Athenry, with students also enjoying a live metal sculpting demonstration at school. Installed during the 2023/2024 academic year, the six sculptures quickly became a much-loved part of school life.

Lasting Legacy

Lasting Legacy These sculptures are far more than art installations—they are storytelling pieces created by and for our school community. They spark conversation, inspire imagination and reflect the values that make Limerick Educate Together such a special place.

Welcome Sign

A fox and hare greet visitors at the school entrance, symbolising the warm and welcoming spirit of our school community.

Flying Emu

Representing adventure, curiosity and dreaming big, this playful sculpture reminds students that anything is possible.

The Considerate Squirrel

Inspired by student discussions about kindness and awareness of others, this sculpture reflects empathy, care and thoughtful actions.

Mousy Brown

Three mice sharing pizza together represent friendship, community and the joy of spending time together.

Capybara

Chosen by students to reflect diversity and inclusion, the Capybara celebrates the welcoming nature of our school and the many cultures within our community.

The Heron

Inspired by a real visitor to our school grounds, the Heron acts as a guardian figure, symbolising care, protection and support.
